A lot of people have this question, the first time they try out Google's 'site:' command, and see that they only have a handful of backlinks according to Google.
They're even more confused when they come here, to www.AdhocAds.com, and see that Google backlinks are one of the dominant statistics we capture about each site in our inventory to determine the quality of the site.
I've even heard it said that we should use Yahoo's site explorer to see all of a domain's true backlinks. This simply isn't true.
The fact of that matter is that Google only show's the quality backlinks. Backlinks that it considers worthy of passing along link juice. Backlinks that aren't using the no-follow tag. Backlinks that have been accumulated since the last drop the domain has had. Backlinks that aren't coming from places Google deems as link farms, and other low grade sites.
We use Google backlinks becuase they are so stringent. When you see backlinks for a site on Google, you know that those are from authoritative, quality pages, and that they will absolutly count in the PR determined from the page they link to.
Sure, Yahoo shows ALL backlinks, but the vast majority of them won't count towards Google's calculation of pageRank.
